40-Day Memorial in a New Back Garden

Yesterday, we gathered with a group of friends, family and support workers for a memorial evening for Peppa.
Preparing our back garden for the event was quite a challenge, which will be covered in a separate post.
Alex Antunes, support worker from 2022-2025, called in during the afternoon and helped us digging a grave-site and decorating a memorial. She also brought some lavender sprigs for people to drop into the grave for Peppa’s send-off. Peppa’s grave-site is adjacent to where we buried Mishi.

We originally got Peppa as a companion cat for Mishi. But Peppa’s approach to play – biting – didn’t endear her to Mishi. Now they can rest together in harmony – with no risk of biting. Peppa was really a solo operator.

After placing Peppa in her grave, people took turns to bid Peppa farewell , including with lavender sprigs and cat treats. Antigone placed the first soil into the grave using Peppa’s poop scoop. Her brother Con, a professional earthmover, moved most of the earth.

After burying Peppa, we enjoyed the mild weather and had a lovely outdoor dinner together. We also enjoyed viewing photos of Peppa over the years.

Thanks to Alex Antunes, Janey Florez and Catherine Zeevaarder for the photos. Thanks to Con and Doris for the candle.
